Bangladeshi Support Group

Overview of client requirements:

The group are responsible for providing support and information on Speaking English, council tax, social security benefits, immigration, housing, education and training, filling in forms, substance abuse issues, racial harassment, and other issues concerning members of the Bangladeshi community.

The training requirement was to deliver a session to an all female group (variety of ages) of Bangladeshi women to improve their confidence in relation to personal safety, within the community. Concerns were related to intimidating language/behaviour sometimes directed at them, when dealing with home callers, travelling as pedestrians and when using a variety of public transport. Some specific concerns in relation to the delivery of the training were that a small proportion of the group where non-English speaking and that traditionally within Bengali culture that there was some concern with only male trainers delivering the session.

The solution we provided:

The content of the course centred on personal safety principles, in the home and in public places. Some additional simple breakaway skills were included to add confidence with contact. Interpreters were included where needed to support the training. We also brought in a female trainer colleague to allay potential fears in relation to gender.
