Conflict Resolution Training

Who should attend:   Delegates who may have to face and deal with aggressive or threatening behaviour in the workplace.

Duration:   5 hours contact
     
Training Methods:   Classroom based using the principles of adult learning.
     
Assessment:   This will be continuous for the duration of the course providing personal development in this subject. There will be no formal assessment.
     
Course Aim:   To provide delegates with the basic knowledge, understanding and skills to deal with potential conflict situations.
     
Course Objectives:   By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:
  • State the meaning of conflict and common causes
  • State common responses to conflict
  • Understand the importance of gathering relevant information and making appropriate threat assessments
  • Describe common types of behaviour that may be encountered and the relevance of impact factors
  • State relevant policy and use of force legislation.
  • Give examples of appropriate options that can be used to deal with conflict situations
  • State the components of communication and their importance when defusing confrontation
  • Select appropriate communication models for different stages of conflict
  • Recognise the importance of post incident procedures

Content

We will aim to conduct the workshop within 5 hours with appropriate comfort breaks. The content of the day will include the following using a variety of methodology following the principles of adult learning.

  • Delegate conflict experiences
  • Common drivers/causes of conflict?
  • Conflict continuum
  • Aggression management model
  • Stress reactions
  • Components of communication (Verbal/non verbal %)
  • Violence precursors and indicators
  • Common Offender Behaviour
  • Proxemics – Intimate, personal and public zones
  • Impact factors – Person, place and object
  • Use of force legislation and self defence
  • Communication/defusing models (LEAPS, Betaris Box, Five step Appeal)
  • Non-aggressive postures
  • Distance –action v reaction.
  • Physical/improvised barriers– desk, chair etc
  • Escape routes, layout of room etc
  • Reflection and reporting

We can provide a detailed lesson plan if required.
